Kick off the outdoor concert season with the greatest living exponents of Jamaica's reggae tradition. The Wailers formed in 1969 when Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Peter Tosh recruited the Barrett brothers-bassist Aston “Family Man” and drummer Carly from Lee Perry's Upsetters to play on hits such as Lively Up Yourself, Trenchtown Rock, and Duppy Conqueror. Inspired by Rastafari and their ambitions of reaching an international audience, this is the line-up that pioneered roots rock reggae. When Bunny and Tosh left two years later, the Barrett brothers, whose rhythms underpinned innumerable seventies' reggae hits by other acts, backed Marley on the group's international breakthrough album, Natty Dread, and the succession of hits that sold in excess of 250 million albums, made Marley a global icon, and made the Wailers the world's best loved reggae band. Subsequent lineups have revolved around Family Man, who is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest bass players. He was present on all of those unforgettable performances by Bob Marley & The Wailers from the seventies. He and lead singer Elan Atias form the main axis of the current Wailers—one of the last, great authentic reggae institutions.

BARON WOLMAN: THE ROLLING STONE COVERS
Santa Fean Baron Wolman was Rolling Stone's first chief photographer who took all those iconic shots of Hendrix, Zappa, Garcia, Joplin, and Morrison that we all know so well. Baron is an old friend and supporter of Southwest Roots Music and we're jazzed to be working with him to bring the Wailers to Santa Fe. In conjunction with the concert, from 5 to 7 pm on the day of the show, Baron's Rolling Stone Covers exhibition opens at Andrew Smith Gallery (122 Grant Ave., 984-1234). On display are 21 issues of Rolling Stone on which Wolman’s photos appeared, accompanied by silver gelatin prints of those very photographs. Say hello to Baron during the opening reception, then join him and the Radio Free Santa Fe staff at the Santa Fe Brewing Company for a night of classic reggae. Psychedelic guitarist PHIL BROWN will be playing both at the exhibition and at the after-party at the Brewing Co. following the Wailers' set. For more on Baron, check out baronwolman.com.
