PETER ROWAN
One of the major cult bluegrass artists of all time, Peter Rowan has yodeled, played numerous stringed instruments, blown his saxophone and sung his way into the hearts of an ever-growing and fiercely loyal international following. Born into a musical family in Boston, Rowan has played in more classic bands during his four-decade career than almost any of his roots-royalty peers. In the sixties he was rhythm guitarist and lead singer with Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys. In 1967, he joined mandolinist David Grisman in the folk-rock band Earth Opera. In 1972 he formed the Rowan Brothers with siblings Chris and Lorin. Then came the legendary Old & in the Way with Grisman, Jerry Garcia, Vassar Clements and John Kahn. In 1974, Rowan, Grisman, Clarence White and Richard Greene formed Muleskinner, a bluegrass band. In the eighties he began playing rock and bluegrass with Mexican Airforce, which featured Tex-Mex accordion icon Flaco Jimenez. Throughout the eighties and nineties he has continued to work with a variety of musicians, constantly touring, releasing albums, always writing, slipping by degrees into American music legend status. We are proud to welcome Rowan to Santa Fe for his first Thirsty Ear performance.
ROBERT EARL KEEN
One of Texas' most beloved musical heroes, Robert Earl Keen's humorous, twangy, rocking alt-country and absorbing story songs and ballads have woven their way into the cultural fabric of the Lone Star state and beyond. A native of Houston. Keen wrote poetry while he was in high school but didn't pick up a guitar until he attended journalism school at Texas A&M, where he befriended another aspiring young songwriter by the name of Lyle Lovett. They co-penned "This Old Porch" (which both men would later record) and made quite a splash in the mid eighties on the fledgling alt-country scene with their respective debut albums. A string of records on Sugar Hill, Arista, and Lost Highway in ensuing years would see Keen mining the Texas landscape to create earthy characters and memorable stories that would be covered by many of Texas' best-known artists. Meanwhile, his live shows — the meat of Keen's sound — have become legend for their humor and high spirit. We are proud to team up Robert Earl Keen with the Peter Rowan Trio for one of the finest pairings Santa Fe has ever seen.
