Welcome to the 5th annual Thirsty Ear Festival! On this, our fifth birthday, the festival has grown to the point where we've decided to add an evening of festivities on Friday, August 29. Honey-voiced singer-songwriter ELIZA GILKYSON will headline a night that includes a set by JOHN MCEUEN, of NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND fame, the ever-charming country-western duo BILL & BONNIE HEARNE, our ever-popular Friday-night blues jam hosted by ALEX MARYOL, and a smokin' bluegrass stomp. Both the Saloon Stage and the Old Hotel Stage will be going simultaneously, and the music will pulse into the wee hours. On Saturday the outdoor Main Stage kicks off around noon with the likes of bluesmen HENRY BUTLER, COREY HARRIS, and MEM SHANNON, singer-songwriters IRIS DEMENT and KIM RICHEY, young Cajun upstarts the RED STICK RAMBLERS, and roots rocker KEN VALDEZ. On Sunday, the great GOV'T MULE presides over a lineup that includes festival favorite KENNY BROWN (often reverently referred to as the world's greatest slide guitar player), jam master TONY FURTADO, up-and-coming blues guitar whiz ALEX MARYOL, and more. All weekend long, the Old Hotel and Saloon stages will be buzzing with half-hour showcase sets by both regional and national talents, as well as blues jams (Corey Harris will host Saturday night's jam, and Kenny Brown will take the helm Sunday evening) and bluegrass stomps (Santa Fe's most popular young bluegrass band, MARY & MARS, will host stomps on both Saturday and Sunday). For those of you unfamiliar with the JW EAVES RANCH, our festival home for the last four out of five years, it is not an exaggeration to call it the most unique festival setting in America. Located in the gorgeous high desert near Santa Fe, this western "town" was built in 1969 to house the set of Henry Fonda's Cheyenne Social Club. Since then, more than 90 westerns have been filmed in its rustic saloons and dusty streets. Writing about it does not do it justice; you simply have to see it to believe it. As always, high quality New Mexico microbrews will be flowing, BBQ and munchies are readily available, a variety of crafts vendors will cater to your every taste, and kids activities (including a special kid's room for the younger ones) are ample. Camping is located one mile from the festival site and is available on a first-come, first-served basis (please make your camping reservations in advance). And don't forget to ask about our MEMBER PASS, a special ticket that offers shaded stagefront seating and comes with all the bells and whistles. There's music everywhere. Enjoy.
